Customer Case Study: Veterinary Pet Hospital

by | Oct 15, 2024 | Case Study

Client Background

Our client is a large veterinary pet hospital, operating a busy clinic with approximately 30 workstations and multiple physical servers. The hospital is part of the veterinary industry and provides essential medical care to pets, relying heavily on technology to manage patient records, appointments, billing, and communications.

The Challenge

The hospital experienced a major IT crisis when they lost access to all the computers and applications required to run their business. Upon arriving onsite, Cowabunga Computers quickly assessed the situation and discovered that the hospital’s domain controller had lost 2 out of 3 hard drives in its RAID 5 setup. The system was under a Dell warranty, and Dell dispatched a technician to replace the drives.

While Dell successfully replaced the hardware and performed a clean installation of the domain controller, the hospital was left without access to their previous domain environment, rendering all computers inoperable. All user and computer accounts were lost, leaving the hospital unable to function. Their previous IT support was unreachable, leaving them stranded and in need of immediate assistance.

The Solution

Cowabunga Computers acted swiftly to get the hospital back online. Our team entered “emergency mode” and immediately began reconfiguring the system:

  • We unjoined and rejoined all computers to the new domain.
  • We created new user accounts for every employee, ensuring each staff member could access their workstations.
  • We reconfigured Avimark, the hospital’s critical line-of-business application, to restore access to their patient data.

Within a single day of focused effort, Cowabunga Computers had the hospital fully operational, restoring their ability to serve their patients without further delay.

Results/Benefits

Following the emergency recovery, Cowabunga Computers implemented a comprehensive maintenance plan to ensure the hospital remained stable and secure:

  • We deployed our full security stack, which includes Huntress, DattoRMM, Avanan, AutoElevate, and our proprietary Cowabunga Sentry.
  • The hospital has enjoyed nearly 100% uptime since the repair, with zero downtime over the past 8 years.
  • Thanks to our turnkey maintenance services, the hospital was able to seamlessly acquire and integrate 5 additional hospitals into their business model, further accelerating their growth.

Cowabunga Computers is proud to support the hospital’s ongoing success, ensuring they have the technology infrastructure they need to continue delivering quality care to their patients.
